CCI DesignLabs – From design research to design concepts

Author: Project Coordinaor, University of Salford (USAL)

25 members of the CCI project consortium met in Salford, UK from 24 to 26 September 2019 to take part in the first three DesignLabs — an intense design analysis and ideation process. The DesignLabs explored three of the four project focus areas that CCI LEAs have been researching: Predictive policing; Community Policing and Crime Prevention through Urban Design & Planning (CP-UDP).

The DesignLabs aimed to ensure the development of the toolkits the LEAs were researching were evidence-based and end-user-led. This will in turn lead to an effective toolkit design and implementation process. Project Coordinator, University of Salford (USAL) provided guidance to all participants and led them through a structured innovation and concept generation process.

The three DesignLabs were discussed over a period of 4 hours each. First the LEAs presented on their idea. The topic was dependent on which focus area they were working on. Partners were split into teams to work together in the abstraction laddering process which led to ideas and concepts being generated. This was followed by prototyping and designs being laid out. At the end, the final design was presented to the rest of the partners and then a vote took place on which team had the most interesting idea. LEAs presenting at the DesignLab were as follows:

  • Predictive Policing – The National Police of the Netherlands (NPN) and Landeskriminalamt Niedersachsen (LKA)
  • Community Policing – Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and Câmara Municipal de Lisboa ( CML)
  • Crime Prevention through Urban Design & Planning (CP-UDP) – Politsei - ja Piirivalveamet ( PJP) and Greater Manchester Police (GMP)
